First and foremost, I would like to start with the name of my Prophet Mohammed(P.B.U.H). ﷺ May the Blessings of Allah be upon him, his household and companions.
My article is going to be very spiritual and non-secular, thus secular people can just stop reading if they would not like to continue. But they can continue reading if they want to be informed. I used to live a very Western kind of lifestyle, but overtime i realised something wasn’t right. Since then my religion has become an important part of my life to me and that’s why i have written this.
Ever since i was a child i have been very curious, and a lot of teachers and professors were quite annoyed by my curiosity. But as i grew up i have learnt from my mistakes, and i try to ask questions when appropriate. My religion, Islam honours the person who exercises his mind to seek beneficial knowledge.
Knowledge is one of the most important part of Islam, it is an obligation and an honor for a Muslim to understand and know where he is going, intellectually speaking. Exercising the mind and seeking the knowledge and discovering the signs of Allah in the universe is part of our worship, it strengthen more our Imaan, or belief in the oneness of Allah .
The Prophet Mohammed ﷺ (P.B.U.H) said:
“Seeking knowledge is a duty on every Muslim” (Bukhari) and “It is only those who have knowledge among His slaves that fear Allah.”(Quran 35:28)
Thus we have to live a life that in which we fear for the consequences of our decisions, this is the approach one should adopt, that God watches all our actions, and we will someday have to pay for the conseqeunces.
One of the famous scholars Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (May God have mercy on him) wrote the following.
“Acquire knowledge because doing so is good.
Seeking it is worship.
Reviewing it is glorifying Allah.
Researching it is jihad.
Teaching it to the ignorant is charity.
Serving the scholars is a way of drawing near to Allah because knowledge is the path of ascension to the stations of Paradise.
It is a companion in isolation and a comrade in distant lands.
It speaks to you in solitude.
It is a guide to prosperity and a shield against adversity.
It beautifies one among friends and is a weapon against enemies.
With it Allah elevates people and makes them guides and bellwethers of good.
The scholars are people whose words are sought and whose actions are imitated.
The angels long for the scholar’s company and comfort them with their wings.
Everything, Everything!
The fish of the sea,
the beasts of the earth,
the predators of the land and sea,
and the cattle pray that blessings come upon him.
This is because knowledge enlivens the heart against ignorance,
illuminates the eyes against darkness,
and strengthens the body.
It transports the servants to the mansions of the select and the righteous and to the highest ranks in the world and in the Hereafter.
Contemplating it is equivalent to fasting,
and reviewing it is equivalent to the Night Prayer vigil. (Salat Al Fajr)
With it, kinship is united and the lawful is distinguished from the unlawful.
Knowledge is an imam (Spiritual Leader) which leads to righteous actions.
It is craved by the people destined for Paradise and shunned by people destined for Hell.”
[Warathatu’l-Anbiya]
We all know we live a very limited life, i am 28 now, and soon i will pass away just like every other one before me. Very few legends are born, and most die nameless. All forgotten and mixed in with the dust.
Getting back to the point. Seeking knowledge can be categorised into secular and spiritual streams. To live a life worth living we should we must balance both so that we can give a good contribution to the world, and live a life worth living. One should acquire as much as knowledge of the Deen as of the Dunya, and to make sure our relationship with people is good, and relationship with God is good also. It is my quest to grasp the basic principles of Islam so i can walk on the right path, and hopefully be saved from the hellfire.
But how do i plan to do all of this?
I try to read. Why? Because God told us to.
1. Read (Proclaim!) In the Name of your Lord who created
2. Created man, out of a clot (of congealed blood).
3. Read (Proclaim), and your Lord is the Most Generous,
4. Who taught by the Pen,
5. Taught man that which he knew not.
Clearly God told us to read in order to remove the confusions of our mind, and to make us better informed.
We should all aim to serve god, by serving the people. I know that if i do not achieve professional success, then the weight of my words and my accountability will suffer, thus my knowledge will be useless.
“AllahHumma Inne Assaluka Ilman Nafia, Wa Rizkan Tayyibun, wa Amalan Mutaqabilan.”
But without adhering to God’s commands and his teachings of the Prophet ﷺ (P.B.U.H) I will be among the losers in the hereafter.
In any case, my article is just an expression of my feelings, it could be full of meaning for many, and entirely useless to some.
