Crisis of Unity

Note: The following article is a personal opinion with respect to understanding my religion, and enable me as an individual on the search of enlightenment/spiritual awakening. The content is in a ‘exploratory state’ should not be taken as a fact, but rather an opinion, from my experience as a human being who is bound to make mistakes because God my creator has given me the ability to make choices. Able to make decisions is part of my Fitrah or natural deposition/tendency.

Anyone who has even read a little bit of the Quran would know, that each and and every single human being has so many faults inside themselves. Its a part of self-realisation. Chaos is our ultimate fate, as far as the Dunya is concerned. The Quran recognises that the “World” or Dunya is dystopic, or that the life we experience is quite chaotic, and is not in anyway or form perfect or absolute by any definition. Every single one of us, is bound to make mistakes.

So how could anyone stick to a particular dogma or way of belief, when God himself has made people of many different types of mindsets and cultures. Every single one of us is unique and different.

Thus it would be quite naive to believe that a particular interpretation of the Quran holds true, and the other interpretations of God’s word are wrong.

Ittihad or unity is one of the most fundamental concepts of Islam. To think that only one particular person or sect is superior and the rest are inferior is in fact, a disease of the ‘Nafs’ referred to as ego-centricism in the modern world.

Muslims today, are divided amongst themselves. Such divisions are not endorsed by Islam. Islam believes in fostering unity amongst its followers.

“And hold fast, altogether, by the rope Which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves.” [Al-Qur’an 3:103]

“As for those who divide Their religion and break up Into sects, you have no part in them in the least: Their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all that they did.” [Al-Qur’an 6:159]

Thus God himself is directly informing us that one should disassociate oneself from those who divide their religion and break it up into sects.

According to Tirmidhi Hadith No. 171, the prophet (P.B.U.H) is reported to have said, “My Ummah will be fragmented into seventy three sects, and all of them will be in Hell fire except one sect.” The companions asked Allah’s messenger which group that would be. Where upon he replied, “It is the one to which I and my companions belong”. One interpretation of this hadith is that the Prophet P.B.U.H was an advocate of egalitarianism, meaning that all humans are equal in fundamental worth or social stature, a proponent of the decentralisation of power. Concepts which themselves have no common definition.

The Prophet (P.B.U.H) always emphasised on unity among the Ummah. The Circumambulation that Muslims practice commonly refer to as the ‘Tawaf’ is itself is a visual and physical depiction of the same concept.
