I grew up watching Ninja Turtles and the Terminator and believing that by the time i was an adult, some of us would be half-robots, some of us would be living on the moon, flying weird spaceships. Things that were just part of a child’s imagination. I was over-optimistic as a child, that the world would be a more advanced place, and a lot of humanity’s problems would be solved, and we would have been inhabiting different parts the solar system. Getting back to reality its 2015, and we are all here still on the same planet earth, with the same problems, perhaps even more issues than ever before.

As a child my career choice was that i wanted to be a Ninja Turtle, or perhaps some Terminator kind of robot, who would miraculously save the world. Quite laughable in a mature context, but the memories still live on. Now as an adult, i see the world quite differently. A world full of hunger, poverty, wars, inequality, in a diseased state. All humans fighting over limited natural resources. A world full of greed and lust, where everyone is obsessed with maximising their wealth. The key focus seems to be wealth and territory expansion rather than human betterment.
I am here to tell you that we all have opportunities that we could not have imagined when we were children. We can get rid of problems that have plagues human beings, going from a state of scarcity to a state of abundance.
We are living in a period of human history which is very unique. Because now individuals can do, what only governments and big corporations could do before. For example, the advancement of computing power. How computers are becoming smaller and faster. Please don’t get me wrong, i’m not pretending to be Dr. Michio Kaku, and giving an insight on the future. But i’m talking about how we take things for granted. For example a Cray-1’s computational power of 80 million FLOPS is laughable by the current standards. The GPU inside an iPhone 5S produces 76.8 GFLOPS, about a thousand times as powerful. This progression of power is known as Moore’s Law within the technology community.
The future is going to be full of sensors, robots, 3D printing, augmented reality, and AI. For example i believe that’s it quite possible for people in the future to be printing their own household goods, furniture, electronic circuits, and maybe even what they eat, we could print it out ourselves. Once the social media evolves into something else, new technologies will evolve, creating new bubbles.
The key skill of the future is the ability to learn and adapt, we all need to have a helpful mindset, keep our eyes open for advancements coming from everywhere. Share ideas, inspire, and motivate others.
The world needs more people with good ideas and healthy value systems. The world is desperate for people who believe they can make the world a better place, rather than just increase their own wealth. We need people who can lead by setting an example. I hope someone who reads this can use their hearts, minds and an education to make the world a better place, and give back something to this world. Otherwise the future will be a very dark and scary place, full of wars, greed, and destruction. The future will be what we make of it.
